The Sports Super Centre was built on philanthropic foundations by Chuck Feeney and Ron Clarke in 1999. The facility opened prior to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and played host to a number of international teams for training camps. The centre also hosted a one-of-a kind international athletics meet in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

In 2010, the Queensland Department of Education purchased the facility and the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre (RBSLEC) was formed. Since then, RBSLEC has been hosting Queensland state school students for day programs and overnight camps.

In 2019, BLK Sport came on as a naming rights sponsor of the centre, renaming the facility to the BLK Performance Centre. This agreement was terminated early in the contract due to the unforeseen and unprecedented COVID-19 and the centre rebranded to the now Gold Coast Performance Centre.

The Gold Coast Performance Centre has over 3,000 members of the gym and annually hosts over 200,000 guests for events, sport specific camps and school camps.
