Ice bath therapy provides a powerful and invigorating recovery method designed to help you reduce muscle soreness, accelerate healing and enhance overall wellbeing. The Gold Coast Performance Centre ice baths temperature ranges between 10-14 degrees, providing the optimal environment for recovery. Many members and athletes utilise the 50m outdoor pool (27 degrees) for contrast therapy with the ice bath. Contrast water therapy involves firstly submerging your body in warm water for approximately 3 minutes then submerging your body into a cold bath for 3 minutes, and repeat. This treatment aids the body to extract waste, stimulate circulation and reduce sore aches and pains.
Ice bath therapy benefits
By alternating between very cold and very hot water, you create a muscle pump effect of built up lactic acid and waste. The hot water opens or dilates the blood vessels which were constricted during the ice bathing that effectively flushes your system. Some reported benefits of contrast therapy include:
- improved circulation of blood to all parts of the body
- increased metabolism
- muscle and joint pain relief—speeds up recovery and promotes injury repair
- reduced mental stress and anxiety
- lower blood pressure
- improves overall athletic performance
- improves sleep
- strengthens the bodies immune system
- assists with removing lactic acid.
